Here are a few interesting FAFSA tips and information to be able to make the most of your financial aid.

Create StudentAid.gov account

This will help you be able to apply and manage your financial aid, as well as signing documents that are needed.

File ASAP.

Be mindful of federal, school, and state deadlines to submit your form promptly. This allows time for corrections and avoids application delays, increasing your chance of receiving grant assistance based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Have your documents ready.

Make sure you are ready to finish your form in a single session. The following documents may be required while completing the form:

  • Tax returns

  • Current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts

  • Net worth of investments, businesses, and farms

  • Records of child support received

  • FAFSA success in 2024: key tips to remember:

Avoid making common mistakes on your form- read questions and definitions carefully.

To prevent issues with your FAFSA submission, ensure that you submit the form on time, provide accurate income information, and avoid errors such as missing details or typos.

Clear your cache if you encounter an unknown error.

In the event that you encounter an "unknown error" message when filling out the FAFSA form, you might be able to bypass the error by following these steps:

  • Log out of the form.

  • Clear your internet browser’s cache.

  • Log back in to the form.

Reduce reportable assets by paying down debt.

The FAFSA looks at both income and reportable assets when calculating financial aid eligibility. For many households, there is a simple way to reduce reportable assets: Pay down debt!

File the FAFSA—even if you don’t expect any financial aid.

When applying for scholarships and federal student loans, completing the FAFSA is essential, even if you think you won't qualify for financial aid. Many scholarships require FAFSA submission, and federal loans are usually more affordable than private options.

List up to 20 schools for accurate aid info.
