Seeking financial aid involves a detailed series of steps and information that needs to be submitted to be able to determine eligibility. It is crucial to seek guidance and avoid errors that may put your financial aid at risk. Below are some valuable tips from FAFSA experts and financial aid professionals to support your success.
Filing FAFSA Now Helps Your Future
Fred Amrien, a nationally recognized expert in educational funding, recommends that all college-bound students and their families complete the FAFSA because it can "improve the debt structure and repayment options in the future for both students and parents."
Gather the Following Important Documents
According to college financing expert and Discover Student Loans Brand Ambassador, Jodi Okun, these are important documents to have ready before filling out your financial aid application:
Social Security numbers for students and parents, or Alien Registration Numbers for non-U.S. citizens.
Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID
Driver’s license or other valid government ID
Tax returns for students and/or parents
Asset records such as bank statements and investments
Records of untaxed income
Federal school codes for the schools you want to apply to
For Specific Questions on FAFSA
Director of Technical Assistance at National College Attainment Network, MoraLee Keller, says that a great place to look for assistance with your FAFSA application would be in your high school's access programs. If your high school does not have access programs, a "guidance department may be offering FAFSA completion... with financial aid experts on hand to answer families’ questions". If you feel that your questions are too specific, call the financial aid office of the college you are planning on applying to. Keller even suggests that you speak with a few colleges to verify the response.
Help in the Wrong Places
Keller recommends staying away from third-party sites that offer assistance in filling out your FAFSA application. These sites are only designed for transferring your information from their site to the FAFSA form, but "the software doesn’t accommodate signing the FAFSA or amending it with updates," Keller states.
According to Keller, it is only possible to obtain signatures directly from the official government website. The FAFSA website is also the exclusive platform for adding a new college or printing your Student Aid Report. Therefore, it is recommended to steer clear of third-party websites.
