College applications are a vital process to getting into your dream college or school. Here are some tips from Shelly Rufin, 32-year College Planning Expert.
Apply Early
It is best to get started as soon as you can when trying to apply for college. You need time to collect your letters of recommendation, complete essays, and finish filling out forms weeks before they are due. Make these deadlines for yourself so you don't lose track of your application status.
Be careful with your social media
It is best to do a thorough cleaning of your social media before you start your college applications. Remember that admissions officers want to get to know you, so try to delete anything that could be deemed offensive or inappropriate.
Include your extracurricular activities
When beginning to work on your application, try to include your extracurricular activities that will make you stand out to colleges. This could be a club, sport, or any other activity that would show that you are creative, have leadership skills, and innovation. You may also add awards that you have received to showcase these skills.
Get good grades
One of the top things that your college will consider about you is if you have good grades. Select courses that are challenging for you but don't stress over straight A's, just show that you worked hard and did your best to improve in the areas that you struggled with.
Take academic challenges
When submitting your college application, it is important to present the most favorable version of yourself. Admissions committees evaluate your readiness for higher education and your capacity for academic achievement. Therefore, your application should highlight your accomplishments, qualifications, and past successes. Enrolling in advanced placement courses also shows colleges that you are willing to tackle challenges and can maintain satisfactory grades.
Focus on your standardized tests
Remember that your SAT and ACT scores play a big part in your application. Take enough time to prepare for the SAT or ACT, and also remember to give yourself enough time to retake it if necessary.
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are meant to showcase your skills, accomplishments, and personality through someone else's perspective. Try your best to obtain letters from teachers whose classes you have excelled in. You may also ask tutors, job supervisors, and other authoritative figures with whom you have worked in a professional or academic capacity.
